Also, apologies for the recent downturn in content. Been working on a bunch of things, hope to have some interesting news and new articles to pass along in the next few days.

But I do think I have pretty good taste in TV shows. You can read a much longer screed about this here. But suffice it to say I watched Mad Men from day one, jumped on Damages before anyone was talking about it, ditto Rescue Me, and after watching them, quickly slotted Deadwood (very high) and The Wire (at the top) onto my list of all-time favorite shows. So if I make a TV recommendation, I trust that you’ll trust me.

Go to your Netflix queue, or Bit Torrent, or whatever other method you use to view shows that are no longer on the air, and IMMEDIATELY pick up the British show State of Play. The show has an innocuous title, and it aired on the BBC six years ago. So you could be forgiven for missing it the first time (I know I did). But now that there’s a major motion picture out, based on the show, starring the likes of Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck and warmly received by critics, you have no excuse.

In a few words, this is what you might call a thriller. In just six episodes (it’s what you’d more accurately call a “serial” rather than a “show”, I suppose), Paul Abbott’s creation introduces, establishes and then absolutely nails a story line that includes political intrigue, widespread corruption, a steamy affair, a takedown of big business, and my favorite, the inner workings of a newsroom sinking its teeth into the story of the decade. It’s also, at times, funny, cheeky, scary, nerve-wracking, dramatic, sad, and uplifting.

I fully admit to a bias when it comes to any show that places investigative journalism at the forefront of the plot. I am, after all, a journalist, even if my rants about Gus Johnson and Tomokazu Ohka are far removed from my days working night police as a 21-year-old for the Montreal Gazette, getting called to a crack house late at night to find a dead body splayed with bullets at the scene. But it’s not like I’m shaky ground here–Season 5 of The Wire is regarded by many people who are not journalists (and aren’t me) as a TV triumph, just as “All The President’s Men” is on plenty of top movies lists that aren’t mine.

I don’t want to spoil the plot of State of Play for you at all, because the show is full of twists and turns. Suffice it to say you need to watch the show right now, certainly before you see the movie version. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, this is just two rentals, with each disc lasting three episodes. All told, we’re talking maybe three viewings if you’re like me and crank up shows while on the treadmill, two or less if you watch from your couch, or on a long flight. Once you start, you definitely won’t want to stop.

At some point I’ll actually publicize this site beyond Facebook and my circle of friends. For right now, all those Simpsons and Montreal Expos references are for you, dear readers.

–The Rays have reportedly engaged the Reds in Adam Dunn talks, knowing that they could get aced out of Bay, either via a trade or fake trade talks. Reds owner Bob Castellini seems wedded to Dunn, though. It’s nice to see the big guy get some support when too many people (especially in Cincinnati) fixate on what he can’t do (hit for average, not strike out) than what he can (lead the league or come close to leading the league in homers and walks, EVERY year). At any rate, if it’s a Brignac/Neimann/3rd prospect for Bay or Dunn, I do it in a heartbeat if I’m Tampa. I’d have to think long and hard before giving up Jeremy Hellickson or Wade Davis, though.

–I see Boston picking up a reliever today and that’s it. John Grabow isn’t all that good though, and he’d be a lousy fallback from all this Marlins-Pirates talk. I’d rather have Will Ohman, for multiple reasons.

–If Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox is true, it’s going to be a rare occasion where I question the logic of otherwise spot-on GM Kenny Williams. Where do you play Junior? He’s clearly below average defensively in center at this point in his career, and he’s below average offensively right now for the Reds, headed for the tougher league. I know Swisher’s struggles have been frustrating, but this puzzles me unless it’s some kind of injury insurance policy. My guess is Paul Konerko is hurt and not likely to be effective for the rest of the year, so they’re thinking Griffey in center and Swisher at first (where he’s a good defender). Still a weird deal, but at least it makes a little more sense that way.

–Seth, I have a feeling your Mets aren’t acquiring an impact bat today. But a waiver trade in August (maybe early August would certainly be possible). The Mets seem fixated on the Mariners’ Raul Ibanez, but unable to grasp that he’s a Type-A free agent to be (because Elias’ free agent rating system loves RBI and is incapable of making proper assessments of player value). Ibanez would require more quality prospects than he’d otherwise be worth. Adam Dunn should be their target, as I’ve already said.

–The Dodgers will do something stupid. Not sure what, but something. Stupid. But yeah, Paul DePodesta wasn’t right for that team. Whatever you say.

–The Chinese government has apparently taken censorship to a new, stathead-unfriendly level. In addition to spying on Internet usage in hotels and blocking sites that mention controversial subjects such as Tianenmen Square, they’ve apparently blocked surfers from navigating to FireJoeMorgan.com. This must not stand–even if it takes the combined power of the Shrute beet farm and the U.S. Senate.

–The owner of a pizza joint in Colorado is offering free pizza for the world if my new adopted team, the Tampa Bay Rays, win the World Series. The article notes that said pizza pusher has made similar promises in the past, shelling out thousands of slices as a result. Note to my buddy Bean in Fort Collins: I’ll be watching the Rays-Cubs World Series at your house. Post-game pizza’s my treat.

–Speaking of the Angels, I correctly predicted the Teixeira deal to Anaheim a couple days before it happened.

Also in that article, I predicted Jason Bay to the Rays and Adam Dunn to the Mets. Guess what? The latest rumor in baseball is Bay to the Rays and SI’s Jon Heyman says two mystery teams are suddenly heating up their interest in Dunn.

Time to parlay this bout of prescience. I’m thinking Vegas this weekend. I’ll bring the hats.
