The Jonah Keri Podcast, Episode 4 (Part 1)

25 October 2010

My guests for the fourth episode are J.E. Skeets, Tas Melas, and Trey Kerby of The Basketball Jones. Skeets and Melas, along with their college buddy Jason Doyle, started TBJ from scratch as an independent audio-only podcast run out of Doyle’s kitchen. Today, The Basketball Jones holds the distinction of being the most popular NBA podcast in the known universe. TBJ also runs a fantastic blog (headed by Kerby and co-authored by contributors Scott Carefoot, Holly MacKenzie and Megan Wilson) and will premiere a brand new TV show Thursday on The Score in Canada.

Technical problems cut Skeets and Melas short in Part 1 of the podcast, but we do get tons of goodness from Kerby, who’s made the seamless transition from Yahoo’s Ball Don’t Lie blog to TBJ. (Part 2, airing tomorrow, brings Skeets back into the conversation.)

The topics we cover in Part 1:

  • 2:27-7:24: The genesis of The Basketball Jones
  • 7:25-11:31: TBJ’s awesome comedic stylings, including the two legendary Hedo Turkoglu sketches
  • 11:32-14:05: What adding Trey and company has done for The Jones
  • 14:06-17:02: If you’re a lower-tier NBA team, how do you rise to the level of the Lakers and other top teams, when you don’t have a farm system the way MLB or the NHL does?
  • 17:03-40:45: NBA Eastern Conference Preview: Can the Heat possibly meet expectations? Do the aging Celtics have a chance to get back to the Finals? Should we be sleeping on the still-loaded magic? Plus our Eastern Conference sleeper team and much more
