Archive of the Day: Jingoistic Hockey Viewing
15 April 2010
Today’s Archive of the Day is also the first story I ever wrote for ESPN.com’s Page 2. With the hockey playoffs under way, I’ll be backing my hometown Montreal Canadiens. But if the Habs get eliminated, I’ll turn to whichever Canadian teams are left.
Why? Read on.

“If” the Habs get eliminated?
(Bitter, bitter Leafs fan.)
1967.
From the article: “‘Monday Night Football’ pulls big ratings, but ABC wouldn’t have deigned to call the show ‘Football Night in America.’”
NBC on the other hand…
I know, right? The article was written in 2006, before Football Night In America’s debut.
My favorite example of something like this was an early episode of The Simpsons. Dolph, Jimbo and Kearney were loitering near the ice cream display at the Quik-E-Mart. Clearly visible was a tub of Triple Chocolate ice cream. It was an innocuous little joke by the writers. Ice cream makers had recently started marketing Double Chocolate ice cream, so they thought how silly it would be to pretend Triple Chocolate existed. Of course this is exactly what debuted in real life not long afterwards.

Jonah: I dont think I could root for any club out west, Calgary beat us in ’89 and I have no love for the Oilers either. I would root for an original 6 team (no Bruins or Leafs), i.e. the 1994 Rangers/Canucks final.
I am sure that my opinion is in the minority though but there is no real Canadian pride in my hockey.
Hoping for a better result for les habs in Game 3.
