Baseball’s Working Poor

15 March 2010

An early contender for my favorite clip of the year. During my book research, I spent nearly two hours interviewing Tampa Bay Rays outfield prospect Fernando Perez. In retrospect, should have been two months.

Perez is a Columbia grad, a published poet and an occasional contributor to the New York Times – as well as the protagonist in this clip, and a “struggling” member of Major League Baseball’s Working Poor class.

The whole thing fills me with ironic joy. (Major h/t to the great folks at DRaysBay.com):

I was not aware that Carl Crawford showers in Evian, or that Denard Span works as an unpaid intern for the WNBA. Chilling.

Ha, this awesome. No more WNBA for Span after signing that contract this week!
