Let's all admit that the tears flowed after the Schmidt and Monday homers. For the NLCS, my gym teacher stopped our after-school grade 6 soccer game in Ottawa so we could crowd around the little transistor radio i'd brought to school. 30 or 40 kids plus Mr. Walsh. We all stood there in disbelief and Mr. Walsh had the class to call off the rest of the soccer game and send us home to cry some more.
I think you could compile a book of reactions to those two sad days.
On the other hand, the fans chanting Jerry and Steve as we walked down the ramps and out after Game 3 still makes me weep happy tears.

Well I might as well chime in with my fave Expos moment. I probably went to my first game back in '74 (I remember seeing actual sunlight at an Expos game) at Jarry, my dad would take me to the first game, then drive me back to the 'luc' and take my mum.

My fave memories:
Sept 13th 1992, My brother and I took my dad for his birthday, it was a Sunday nite ESPN game and the Expos werent out of it yet. The Mets were in town and the Doc was pitching. He threw a hell of a game and Anthony Young blew it for him. Larry Walker hit a shot to left off of him and won the game for the Expos.
Oh ya, Dick (?) Schofield made a wonderful play for the Mets.

The saddest memory was the Mike Schmidt game. My drove back froma trip to Toronto, he left at 5:00 AM, assuming that the game would begin at 1:30, it rained that day, we waited till at least 5, watching people drink beer after beer and smoke cigarette after cigarette. Mike Schmidt took Stan Bahnsen deep to win the NL in 1980 for the Phillies, I was 12 years old and it was the first time I shed tears for the 'Spos.

Glad to see someone else who cared about the Expos. They actually made me weep when Schmidt tagged Stan Bahnsen to take the division in 1979.

Your article about the last game in 2004 was excellant. I had given up caring after they traded Pedro and became a Jays fan but old emotions flooded back that nite. So many reasons why the Expos left but it was a good baseball city for many year.

I will be looking forward to your book on the Devil Rays.

P.S. All the best girlfriends back in my day were from VSL :-)

You guys were lucky. In Ottawa we had to make do with occasional trips to the Big O, the odd Saturday game on CBC, and a lot of Duke and Dave.

Love this article, Jonah. Thanks. I'll never forget that first game back after his holdout. You forgot to mention that unbelievable performance.

Yup, I've been corrected on Tommy Greene game before - no doubt conflating it with one of the hundreds and hundreds of other random games I dragged my carcass to over the years.

By the time I became aware of how awesome Foufounes was, I was moving out of town. In retrospect, though, I agree that recycled beer and recycled spaghetti and sitting around for 3 hours at Peel was not as hot a party as I anticipated.

(And I'm from Ville St. Laurent, not CSL, by the way)

Mr. Keri. I have been a fan of your work for a good many years. It is nice to read about another Jewish baseball fan from the West end (CSL?) who adored the Expos, way more so than hockey.
I am happy for the Hawk but wished Alomar made it this time.

P.S. The Tommy Greene no hgitter with 7 or so walks was a day game and there were at least 7,000 people there. Instead of going to Peel Pub I hung out at Foufoues Electriques (way more punk!)
