My Year In Cities, 2009

29 December 2009

Every year, Jason Kottke does a post listing every city in which he spent a night over the course of the preceding year. It’s a great idea, really. Looking back over your travels in the past 365 days lets you reflect on all the adventures of the past year, the triumphs, disappointments, and random Comfort Inns that defined your day-to-day existence.

I liked the idea so much, in fact, that I decided to steal it for 2008 (Saco, Maine STILL elicits a huge “ugh”, given the circumstances).

2009 was an eventful year for your resident hoser blogger, to say the least. There was a ton of travel in support of the upcoming book (including a day spent in Hazleton, PA, which doesn’t count in The Year In Cities since I didn’t spend the night); there was a near-death experience; and moments of unbridled joy.

Here then, is the official 2009 version of’s Year In Cities, in no particular order:

Durham, NH
Somerville, MA
Newton, MA
New York City, NY (both Manhattan and Brooklyn)
Portland, ME (Birthplace of future millionaire LOOGYs)
Madrid, Spain (Penthouse Bullfighting article FTW)
Barcelona, Spain
Toronto, ON
Niagara Falls, ON
Montreal, QC
Calgary, AB (Stampede, woo!!!)
St. Petersburg, FL
Punta Gorda, FL (gotta love Florida)
Denver, CO
Los Angeles, CA
San Diego, CA

Sixteen cities, four countries, seven states, three provinces. (Last year: 21 cities, nine countries, eight states, two provinces) Two babies will likely cut into travel time in 2010. Then again, as this year proved all too well, you never know what tomorrow will bring.

So where did your travels take you in 2009?

@Jason: That is a crazy list. You’ve just reminded me why I’m happy I never pursued my childhood dream of being a baseball beat writer.

@Eric: What’s Rogue River like? I hear great things, but have only driven past.

@Alex: Love your post with the embedded pics. I might try that next year, great spin on Kottke’s concept.

@Tommy: OK, obviously you have to tell us about “Unidentified Virginia Town.”
