Not far behind my ongoing crusades against the War On Drugs and Abstinence-Only Education, as well as my ranting about The Greatest Baseball Team That Ever Existed, you’ll find some diatribes aimed at the war-monger pundits who gleefully send troops into harm’s way every day, tens of thousands of them at a time.
Such thoughts aren’t always warmly embraced in this country. In the days and weeks immediately after 9/11, raising an objection over launching deadly wars on sovereign nations would’ve earned you the label of coward, even traitor. The rhetoric has died down somewhat, and public opinion has changed dramatically after years of battle fatigue piling up. Still, the White House is letting the hawks — many of them the same hawks who’ve never come within 1,000 miles of combat — dictate foreign policy. President Obama’s recent decision to send 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan, rather than begin to scale down this deadly and costly war, ranks among the biggest failures of his Presidency.
For some people, the ideas of Supporting The Troops and wanting them sent home are inconsistent. This is, of course, cuckoo bananas. What better way to honor and protect veterans than by sending them home to be with their loving families? The brave men and women who’ve put themselves in harm’s way deserve their heroes’ welcome. They deserve to return to their loved ones.
They deserve to be mobbed by their dogs.
