50 Best Foods In The World
Love, love, LOVE this article (h/t kottke.org). It’s about food and about travel, it’s in list form, and it’s controversial. It’s like the holy grail of eyeball-fetchers.
Comments:
–I’ve only had 1 of the 50, the pastrami at Katz’s (#14). The smoked meat at Schwartz’s in Montreal, while an admittedly different sandwich, is better.
–Custard tart (#15): Yet another reason to visit Lisbon, which has been on our to-do list for years.
–Had to look up what Zabaglione is (#4). Looks delicious.
–Best steak I ever had was at Il Latini, an enormously popular place in Florence. It was so good, it was one of the reasons I actually gave up eating red meat. I figured steak doesn’t taste nearly as good here in North America, so I wouldn’t be missing much.
Also, the best a lot of things I’ve ever had were at one place or another in Florence. If it’s possible for Tuscan food to be underrated, then it is.
–Given Dr. Fauchier’s taste for the richest chocolate cake, and her amazing ability to find the best food in any strange city, I’m amazed we never went to #40.
–I’m similarly amazed I’ve never been to Fosselman’s (#9) for a milkshake. Lived in LA 6 years, love milkshakes more than…maybe anyone, and never went there. I intend to rectify this situation shortly, maybe even over Xmas.
–I am all over going for oysters in Northern Ireland (#1) and ceviche in Peru (#46). Jeez those both sound awesome.

It is a fun list. But like all such efforts, it is somewhat narrow in view. In the comments section there and on Laura Reilly’s blog, a number of people commented on the absence of New Orleans cuisine as well as Australian. There are many more missing as well-Turkey, Brazil, Sub-Saharan Africa. Naturally, natives of any missing country or city will probably claim foul.
Similarly I think there would be complaints that particular food types are missing, often types representative of a particular region. No lobster roll, for example? Did I miss an entry for beer? If so, that is an odd omission. I suppose the fun of such a list is that one can continually add, delete or alter items on it and remain amused by it for a long time.
Agreed on all those counts.
Best falafel?
Best hot dog?
Best lamb chops?
Best dumplings?
Never ends.
And they miss the staples too. Beer, of course. How about best bread? Best soup? Best salad? Etc.
There’s no way to do a perfect list. I love it as an argument starter and an entree into these other debates though.
I’ve got my appetite whetted and my traveling shoes on. Wouldn’t necessarily be my 5o favourite; but am willing to give them all a try…pigeon liver sauce!?!? (maybe if I didn’t know what I was eating)
Oh man, I was in Singapore for several days and I can tell you, EVERY meal we had was amazing..roast duck, chicken biryani, chili-crab + grilled frogs legs, satay chicken..it was the most excessive eating trip have ever experienced..
