USA Today has an article out about the League of Alternative Baseball Reality, one of the longest-running fantasy baseball leagues in existence, home to some of the leading experts in the industry. The article discusses the strategies employed by the winner of the 2006 AL league, the runner-up in 2007 and the current leader (with one month to go) in 2008.
Oddly, that person has never written about fantasy sports for a living, has no actual strategy other than trying to get as many good players as possible, and relies almost entirely on luck, and bugging people with trade offers.
You can check the AL standings to see who that person is.
Then check the NL standings (team YES) and you’ll understand how much luck is involved.
Or maybe, after MLB killed the Expos, I’ve just decided to disavow myself of all National League-related knowledge.
Probably a little of both.
