Brian Schweitzer for VP?

Sean of fivethirtyeight.com (the blog run by Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus and a mainstay of my daily Google Reader run-through) has an interesting breakdown of Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, detailing the pluses and minuses of Obama tapping him as a running mate. Check it:

Schweitzer is a hell of a smart guy. A soil scientist and rancher, he spent 6 years in Saudi Arabia working on irrigation projects. He speaks fluent Arabic and has an intuitive grasp of the region based on real life experience.

I’m doing my best to get up to speed on all the good political analysis out there. In baseball terms, I’d be the equivalent of someone who started reading Rob Neyer a few months ago, went back and read a Bill James Baseball Abstract in the past few weeks, and am now hopping from BP to Hardball Times to Fangraphs.com, thirsting for more and better sabermetric knowledge.

Having said that, the more I read about Schweitzer, the more I like him. I disagree with his stance on gun control, but…the guy’s from freaking Montana, Libertarian capital of the world. I’d happily live with a smart veep who believes the government should show compassion for those in need, while avoiding overextending its grasp and meddling in people’s affairs (no illegal wiretapping, no legislating what can and can’t happen in people’s bedrooms, etc.).

I’m not ready to give my unconditional stamp of approval yet. But Schweitzer certainly trumps Clinton as a running mate choice. Of course, so does this crumpled piece of lint I just picked off my carpet.
